Q) Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? “When people succeed, it is entirely because of hard work. Luck has nothing to do with their success.” Use specific reasons and examples to explain your position.

Many people work so hard to the extent of falling into a state of burnout to achieve what they personally define as “success”. And when they do achieve the status, it is a common mistake to think that one’s success simply lies in one’s good and right deeds. I strongly argue that success is not entirely a result by the agent’s actions, and meritocracy should be denied.

In what condition a person is born and raised is a significant factor when talking about one’s success. Think, for example, an extremely talented, and a gifted man who grew up in a terribly poor family in the outskirts. The man would never have a chance to get proper education since he should be worrying whether he could have his next meal or not. The geological factors also contribute to his lack of getting some proper learning because school systems and skilled teachers would not be located in regions so far away from major cities. Meanwhile, a kid raised in an affluent family, in the midst of a big city would outperform him in every aspect of studying.

When a person is born is also a feature that we must not overlook. Lebron James, a legendary basketball player who is dominating the league for over a decade, is a highly paid athlete earning millions of dollars a year. He is a terrific player and no one could stand against the fact that his talents are out of this world. But say he was born in the Renaissance, France in the 14th century, with his amazing talents for basketball. Would his merits be highly regarded as it is today? Would people have paid him millions of dollars to watch him play basketball? Rather, painters and musicians would have outearned him by a large deficit.

Meritocracy is a trap that people shouldn’t fall into. We are fully not responsible for our success and the same applies to failure. Luck assumes a big portion of our future, so it is a mistake to disregard the surrounding environments around a person when analyzing about one’s success.
