Q) Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Overall, the widespread use of the internet has a mostly positive effect on life in today’s world.

It is truly hard to imagine a single day without internet access these days. Almost every single task is done online including shopping, reservation, and even social interacting. With the advent of computer, the success of dotcom companies and the 4tth industrial revolution made internet an undetachable feature of our lives. I strongly believe that the internet access has led our life into a more prosperous and convenient realm.

First of all, we are more connected than ever before. Instead of a 14-hour flight from Seoul to New York to meet my lovely cousin, I could just Facetime her and send my greetings. There is also no need to travel all the way to California when a simple input of text and a press of “Enter” on my keyboard would deliver my salutations to a friend studying abroad in Southern California within a second. COVID-19, a global catastrophe that ruined the lives of many, made the worth of internet connection a more apparent thing. Through Facetime and Zoom meetings, we can have meetings with one another no matter where our counterpart is at, while effectively preventing the spread of disease by adhering social distancing rules. Internet has provided a new way of communication, enhancing the quality of our lives and putting people widespread across the globe all in the same place.

The internet also acts as a pool of information. There is simply every single information and knowledge on Earth inside the world wide web. You just type in any kind of material which you want to get insight of, them the results pop up in the form of papers, encyclopedias, and websites. All we have to do is selecting the adequate words to search and making good use of the information we obtain. There might be some negative feedback about this point arguing printed books and real-life materials provide better and more reliable information. This is clearly not true since every single real-life material is on the internet from newspapers to books. And while we need to search for the information by ourselves devoting lots of time when using them, internet provides a shortcut to the knowledge we crave through search&find feature.

The internet became an indispensable thing for us in that it is beneficiary to almost all the things we do today. There will nevertheless be some opposing opinions about the usefulness of the internet. But I am sure that those people who stand on the other side of my point of view must have somehow taken advantage of the internet. They even might have gotten their ideas and inspiration from the web. The internet has always been a crucial part of our civilization from the moment it was born, and I can certainly assure it will also sustain the same reputation in the upcoming future.
